"I'm twelve" was the best answer I could find. It made people laugh but unfortunately, it was not believable. What do they expect me to say then?! They asked because I look "SO YOUNG AND CUTE", but then they don't belive I'm twelve either!
As soon as they hear me talk they realize I'm not as young as I look. I have a very strong voice, a mature way to handle myself and of course, and a noticeable accent. That's when they start guessing where I am from, and honestly, nobody has guessed in these past three years. Normally they ask if I'm Russian, then German, Italian, Sweedish, or any country in Europe. When I say: "Latin America," is like the apocalypse. They stop guessing cause they don't have a clue.
I understand stereotypes. I can even recognize here in the US who speaks Spanish and who doesn't, but I think we should also understand that there's also diversity in Latin America. I love going to CVS or even to the supermarket, and start talking to the cashiers in Spanish. They are truly shocked. And when I tell them I'm from Uruguay, they completely get it and start asking me about Luis Suárez (one of the most famous soccer players from Uruguay, who tends to be a little bit more agressive than the rest haha.) But when I tell an American that I'm from Uruguay, MOST of the times, I get a blank face. That's when my favorite part comes, because I get to talk about my country and explain them where it's located.
The most popular question I get after that is: "Are all the people in Uruguay white and blue eyed like you?" The truth is: no. Of course not everyone looks like me in my country. (Let's also clarify that I'm half German as well, from my mom's side, so that's another reason for my look.) The thing is: diversity is all over the world. And even though we tend to create stereotpyes, we should be aware of the fact that there are always going to be exceptions in life and we can't put everyone in the same bag. Because I had also met a lot of Americans who perfectly know where I'm from and get fascinated with that, as they don't know much people from Uruguay.
Your look is always external, is what everyone can see. You will only show who you really are to those who really matter, and that's when you show your inner self. Never judge or criticize someone because of their look. That's something we don't get to choose.
I am a blonde blue-eyed Latina, and I exist! I'm a real person, just like you.
Remember to be a better person everyday!
Love,
